‘They won’t want to play us’ Confident Netherlands coach after reaching Euro 2022 quarter-finals

The last place in the semi-finals of Euro 2022 is up for grabs tonight when France take on the Netherlands in Rotherham. The winner will face Germany in the next round, completing a bottom four formation that also includes England and Sweden. Both teams finished the group stages with seven points, but that was enough to give France first place in Group D while the Netherlands had to settle for second place in Group C thanks to the difference in Sweden’s top goals.

The French looked brilliant in their first two matches, first beating Italy 5-1 before edging a resolute Belgium 2-1 in the second game. Having already secured a place in the round of 16, France were denied a third straight win after Iceland converted a 12-minute penalty in added time to earn a 1-1 draw in the final group game .

The Netherlands, meanwhile, had an interesting group stage. They held off pre-tournament favourites, Sweden, to a 1-1 draw in their opener – Jill Roord equalizing after half-time – before working hard for their second game against the Portugal. The Dutch gave up a two-goal lead before Danielle van de Donk’s blistering second-half finish secured them a 3-2 win. In the last group game, Switzerland managed to take the lead, but four second-half goals gave the Netherlands victory and the quarter-finals.

Tonight’s game also offers France the chance to exact revenge on the Netherlands and soothe the heartbreak of 13 years ago when the Dutch emerged victorious from a penalty shootout in Euro 2009 to qualify for the semi-finals after a 0-0. to draw. Will history repeat itself tonight?
