There are many reasons why Disneyland is a magical place. Disneyland is a place of childhood nostalgia, pretty fireworks, thrilling roller coaster rides and happy faces. Even Disney’s newest cruise ship is equipped to make visitors’ vacations a magical experience! However, many people can argue that part of Disneyland’s appeal is its many dining options. For years, Disneyland has enticed travelers to visit the park with their innovative twist on classic theme park fare, often creating cute treats that resemble Disney characters.

Each year, Disney concocts lovely creations that entice people to visit the park. However, there are a few classics that the park has carried over into modern times that still capture the hearts of many park-goers. Take a look at Disneyland’s most popular foods and how they’ve changed (or haven’t changed).

8 Mickey waffles

What’s better than waffles? Mickey shaped waffles! In the early 1980s, Disney wanted to design a waffle to resemble the face of the mouse mascot, struggling to develop a waffle maker that would create a sturdy shaped waffle. Over the decades, Mickey Waffles has been a beloved morning institution at many Disney resorts, Disney-themed cruises, and throughout the park.

The shape of these pretty waffles has not changed since their creation. However, today park-goers can enjoy these waffles in different flavors at different locations in Disneyland. Even at Tokyo Disneyland, visitors can try seasonal flavors of Mickey Waffle at The Great American Waffle Company.

7 Pop corn

Hot, fresh, buttery popcorn is a staple at many county fairs and movie nights. But this salty snack has also been a classic snack enjoyed at Disneyland since the park opened in 1955. For decades, park visitors have enjoyed not just a bag of salty popcorn, but popcorn presented in a myriad of flavors. Customers can also eat sweet caramel popcorn or other varieties like butterscotch almond, truffle, or even blueberry almond. Tourists can also pick up a unique array of popcorn jars as souvenirs of their visit to the park!

6 Peanut Butter and Jelly Shake

How to improve PBJ? If it is turned into a milkshake, of course! Back in 1989, Disney chefs probably kept that in mind when creating the peanut butter and jelly milkshake for Disneyland’s 1950s Prime Time Cafe in Hollywood Studios. Since its inception, the PBJ Milkshake hasn’t changed much over the decades because it’s such a hit at the park! There’s not much to improve on perfection, and Disney’s PBJ Milkshake is a perfect example! This treat is an ideal mix of sweet and savory, with a dollop of whipped cream to add to the richness of the shake.


5 The Mickey Bar

Despite its simplicity, the Mickey Bar is an iconic treat that is one of the most recognized theme park-related snacks. This treat is an ice cream bar dipped in milk chocolate in the shape of Mickey Mouse. This candy was released in 1985, but originally the candy was only oval in shape. Then, in the 1990s, Disney decided to transform the bar to look like Disney’s most famous mascot. Today, the treat can be enjoyed and purchased at ice cream parlors at all four Disney theme parks. However, this favorite ice cream bar can also be found in grocery stores!


4 The Mickey Pretzel

How to improve a pretzel? If it’s shaped like a fun character, of course! Like the Mickey Bar, the Mickey Pretzel is another Disney theme park staple. This wearable treat is designed to resemble the face of Disney’s most iconic mouse. Despite its simplicity, the salt rocks and cheesy dip have made this soft snack an all-time favorite at the park since 1982. Few people in the world can resist a soft pretzel, let alone a soft pretzel. Mickey Mouse shape!


3 Mickey Rice Krispy Candy

Many die-hard Disney Parks fans might remember downing a Mickey Mouse-shaped “crispy rice” candy bar while hanging out at Disneyland. This classic is still another popular snack at the park, and visitors can even see how cast members prepare these special treats at Disney World’s main street confectionery. Over the decades, visitors have been able to enjoy an array of Rice Krispie treats in different shapes, sizes and flavors. From giant head-sized Mickey Mouse Rice Krispie candies to small lollipop confections, visitors can try the treats dipped in different chocolate flavors and fillings. The fillings may have changed over the years, but one thing has remained constant: these treats are huge!


2 Dole Whip

There’s plenty of competition on this list, but many Disneyland visitors can’t get enough of the Dole Whip served at Walt Disney World Resorts and Adventureland. After doing must-see stops in Animal Kingdom, the Dole Whip is also a good dessert to enjoy afterwards. This cool treat was introduced at Disneyland’s Tiki Bar in 1986 and also launched alongside the Dole Whip Float. The Dole Whip is a sweet pineapple-flavored dessert (although flavors like Orange, Raspberry, Mango, Lemon, and Strawberry are now available at the parks).

Hungry vegan travelers looking for plant-based cuisine can rejoice: although today’s Dole Whip is a certified vegan treat, it was originally made with dairy! Disney’s Dole Whisk is currently made with non-dairy cream, sugar, and various flavors.

1 The gray stuff

It may have an unappetizing name, but it is delicious according to The beauty and the Beast! In 2012, the park opened a restaurant based on this classic Disney film. The restaurant also released a dessert called “The Gray Stuff”, which was only reserved for special occasions like birthdays or anniversaries. A year later, in 2013, the park decided to release The Master’s Cupcake, which consisted of a chocolate cake topped with Gray Stuff. However, it wasn’t until 2017 (and for a limited time) that Fantasyland released a particular menu item called the Gray Stuff Gateau – a red velvet cake with hints of raspberry and Gray Stuff.

Compared to other snacks at Disneyland, the Gray Stuff is a reasonably new menu item; yet, in a short time, he managed to capture the hearts of passionate Disney fans all over the world!
